Sometimes an Unsolicited Letter Isn't a Scam

Most of the time, consumers can be sure that an unsolicited letter from an unknown source asking for personal information is a scam. We like that consumers turn to BBB for advice when they receive one because it helps us stay ahead of the scammers and bring awareness to those who may become future victims. However, we received an inquiry from a consumer who received the following letter from TexasSure asking for information about their car insurance and it was not a scam...

The truth is TexasSure is an insurance verification program designed to keep more uninsured motorists off the road. The Texas Legislature directed the Texas Departments of Insurance, Public Safety, Transportation and Information Resources to create a database that connects every registered vehicle with its license plate, VIN and liability policy.

This means police officers and tax assessor collectors can access the database to see who is driving without coverage. The letter is simply the program's way of asking consumers to verify their coverage FIRST without placing blame that they are driving without insurance. It's safe to fill out the form and send it back and it may save consumers the hassle of being pulled over for no reason in the future.

Thank you for this information. I as well received the same exact letter in the mail yesterday. I did not know if it was legit. I checked my VIN number on my vehicle against my policy and the VIN number was wrong on my policy. I have contacted my insurance agent about the error and mailed the letter back to TexasSure advising the information has been corrected.
