The Electronic Security Association (ESA) announced on Wednesday, March 24th that a new stricter code of ethics and standards of conduct will now be enforced for its over 2,800 security company members. The measures are aimed at cutting down on the number of complaints the industry receives about both telephone and door-to-door salespersons.
The new requirements include:
Enhanced Identification - Sales representatives must carry a photo ID and clearly state who they work for.
More Respect for Customers - Sales representatives must immediately leave someone's property if they are requested to do so.
No False Accusations - Sales representatives cannot falsify information about their competitors.
Improved Contract Requirements - Written materials must clearly disclose all terms and condititions and must be given to the customer when closing the sale.
Better Refund Policies - Sales representatives must disclose all termination fees and honor all refunds prior to the sale of the service.
The new requirements take effect immediately. Consumers who continue to have issues with security companies should contact BBB to file a complaint and check the company out at www.bbb.org before purchasing any service.
*Thank you to ESA for providing the details of the new requirements.
