BBB’s Guide to Back-to-School Shopping During the Tax-Free Weekend

While the tax-free weekend offers a great opportunity to stock up on the necessary back-to-school items, Better Business Bureau encourages families to plan ahead to get the best buy for their buck.

Don’t get Heated by High-Pressure Door-to-Door Salespeople

After receiving hundreds of complaints against companies using aggressive door-to-door sales tactics to pressure consumers into buying bogus or misleading products, Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert about such companies. The issues range from magazine subscriptions that were paid for but never delivered, to food products that were not of the high quality originally promised.

Avoid Online Scammers on Cyber Monday

The Monday after Thanksgiving, dubbed Cyber Monday, is growing in popularity as a day to shop online. According to the National Retail Federation, seven in 10 online retailers expect their sales to grow at least 15 percent this holiday season. The NRF's holiday survey also found that the average person plans to do 36 percent of his or her holiday shopping online – up from 33 percent last year.

Back to School Shopping Tips for the Tax-Free Holiday

The 13th annual Sales Tax Holiday, or Tax-Free Weekend, begins Friday and runs until Sunday. Consumers can expect to save approximately $8 for every $100 they spend on most clothing, footwear and school supplies priced less than $100. Door-to-Door Meat Peddlers Plaguing Central Texas Neighborhoods

Central Texas-area consumers should be on the alert for door-to-door meat salespeople, according to multiple complaints recently filed with BBB. In the same fashion BBB warned about last April, consumers continue to allege that the representatives use high pressure sales tactics to collect hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars in cash and then never deliver the meat.

Online DVD Retailer Ignores Consumers’ Complaints

BBB has issued an F rating to San Saba-based PB&J Sales, for failing to respond to consumer complaints. The company, which sells television show DVDs, indicated to BBB in September of 2008 that it was no longer in business. However, the ten complaints that have been filed against PB&J Sales this year confirm that business transactions are again taking place.

BBB Provides Shopping Advice for Black Friday

BBB receives hundreds of complaints every year from consumers who allege a variety of issues with retailers on Black Friday. Common disputes involve the advertised price of items, the availability of those items or failing to receive items after ordering in-store. According to the National Retail Federation, 138 million shoppers will descend on retail stores again this Friday morning, making it the busiest retail shopping day of the year.

BBB has issued an F rating to Alamo Adventure Getaways for failure to respond to consumer disputes. The San Antonio-based company sells travel memberships and solicits consumers nationwide to attend local sales presentations. The attendees are told they can expect rewards worth hundreds of dollars, such as gift cards or travel packages, in exchange for their time.

BBB Recommends Consumers Understand New Rules for Debt Relief Telemarketing

New amendments to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) take effect today in prohibiting debt relief companies from making false promises to consumers. The new rules apply to for-profit debt settlement, debt consolidation and debt counseling companies and will serve to help inform consumers of the services offered prior to payment.
