After receiving hundreds of complaints against companies using aggressive door-to-door sales tactics to pressure consumers into buying bogus or misleading products, Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert about such companies. The issues range from magazine subscriptions that were paid for but never delivered, to food products that were not of the high quality originally promised.

The second annual report issued by the Council of Better Business Bureaus on the progress of the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) shows that, because of the self-regulatory efforts of the nation’s leading food and beverage producers, there has been a continued significant shift in children’s advertising in the United States toward the promotion of healthier dietary choices and lifestyles.

Federal and state agencies have recently conducted two studies of the accuracy of net content statements on cartons of milk. A 1997 study found that many containers of milk sold at wholesale and retail and many cartons of milk served in schools, universities and hospitals contained less than the amount stated on the label. Although the individual package shortages were very small, the cumulative effect of short-filling can be significant over time and across the industry.
