Better Business Bureau gave out 677 Business Reviews over the past 12 months to consumers looking for general contractors in Bastrop. That’s nearly 10 times the number recorded the previous year, before wildfires swept through a large portion of Bastrop County.

Better Business Bureau is issuing a warning about Silver Star Real Estate Group. Since March, BBB received several complaints about this company from across the United States and Canada. Consumers have alleged Silver Star took money to sell their timeshares and then company representatives stopped answering phone calls or returning messages.

With the rise in popularity of social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, many scammers are finding it easy to sell fraudulent investment scams to unwary investors. The Texas State Securities Board issued a release last September advising people to be wary of social media investments scams.

Following an investigation conducted by the Texas Attorney General’s Office, Austin-based U.S. Money Reserve Inc., doing business as United States Rare Coin & Bullion Reserve, must provide $5 million in restitution to consumers. The settlement was finalized through an assurance of voluntary compliance signed by the company and the state of Texas last week. Additionally, the company must reform its sales practices to include additional disclosures regarding the coins sold to consumers.

BBB warns local consumers to think twice before attending Armando Montelongo’s “Mega Millionaire Round Table Live” seminars being held in Central Texas next week. According to the company’s website, daily seminars are planned in the greater Austin and San Antonio areas during the week of May 23 – 27, 2011. These seminars promise to help consumers “learn to make cash” with “no money” and “no credit” by flipping properties they purchase for “pennies on the dollar.” However, dozens of consumers have contacted BBB to complain that they did not get the real estate selling information they expected and to request help getting a refund from the company.

Consumers nationwide should be on the alert for advertisements from two Texas-based companies that are using newspapers to sell gold bullion coins “completely free of dealer mark-up,” Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. The companies appear to be using the ads to entice consumers to buy more expensive “collector coins” at prices significantly higher than they could be bought elsewhere.

BBB ranked No. 25 in the small business category that included Austin-area companies with fewer than 100 employees.

BBB has issued an F rating to Austin-based Warr Investment Group, LLC (WIG) due to a government action issued by the Texas State Securities Board on September 21, 2010. The Emergency Cease and Desist Order issued states that the company’s principles, James Elton "Jim" Warr and Mark Cuba, and its investment opportunity, “The WIG Investment” have not been registered by the Securities Commissioner as required by law.

BBB has issued an F rating to Auction Agency, an Austin-based company which lists foreclosed homes and automobiles for sale on the Internet. Consumer complaints received by BBB allege Auction Agency represented their service as a free trial, then later assessed charges for unrequested services. Additionally, several disputes allege dissatisfaction with the company’s services.

San Antonio real estate investor Armando Montelogo’s website, armandomontelongo.com, describes a rags to riches story and offers educational materials and seminars on investing in the real estate market with bad credit or with no business experience. The website promises tips on “how to build $3,000 - $10,000 per month of residual income!” and “making millions in foreclosures.” Consumers tell BBB a different story.
